Paris is notorious for small and intimate restaurants, Ober Mama certainly isn’t that. Situated in the 11th District (I was told by a local to stick to the 1st-10th Androssiment but Im glad I didnt stick to that) Ober Mama is situated on a busy market street. With four different areas its more like a wonderful quirky tardis. A colourful combination of blues and oranges, wood, brass and marble. There’s even a tree, albeit a fake one, in the middle of the restaurant.
Full to the brim of people, we were so lucky to get a table. When first entering Ober Mamma, you face a magnificent cocktail bar for an Italian aperitivo: the bartender will pour you a home made cocktail, with locally produced alcohol and serves you delicious Toscana ham and Trentin cheese (their mozzarella is imported from Napoli every two days) at the counter. Ask to be seated in the back main room (if you get an option, this place gets very busy, very quickly) so you can view all aspects of this quirky yet fabulously unique space.
After walking by the open kitchen with its double wood oven (also imported from Italy) you enter a wonderful dining room to enjoy massive Neapolitan pizzas, fresh home made pastas and revamped traditional Italian dishes. Served in a delightfully unpretentious environment, where everyone is welcome to have a fun and relaxed meal. Eating from copper pots and on delicately painted plates and bowls. I considered stealing them they were that pretty (I didnt!).
The decoration was entrusted to Alexander Waterworth Interiors, an English office who was able to shape the “at home” identity of the place.
Make sure you order Napoli Badass – spicy sausage, mozzarella, red and yellow peppers, basil… best pizza in Paris right here and the Truffle Pasta – black Italian truffles, mascarpone cheese, mushrooms swimming beautifully with fresh ribbons of pasta in a copper sauce pan direct from the oven. I think this could quite possibly be one of my favourite dishes I have ever eaten!! Don’t visit Paris without paying Ober Mama a visit. Be aware they don’t take reservations, but you will love it just as much as I did!
